During the Civil War, Jackson was burned on three separate occasions, though the capitol and city hall were spared. Jackson is the state's largest city by far, but modern development has sprawled into the suburbs, leaving the compact downtown area something of a ghost town.

The US is most popular with travellers during the summer, but this is when American families pack everything up and head out to visit Aunt Tilly. To avoid mobs (especially throughout the national park system), it's better to go during autumn or early spring.
